Families, Sets, Collections

Families

Fonts have a family name and a style name. This is entirely logical and ensures that styles are grouped by family name in software applications.

Collections

To keep the number of family styles to a manageable number, some of our families have been further divided and we consider these families to belong to a collection.

As an example, Cadmium is a collection of forty-eight fonts - too many for easy selection. So the collection has been divided (by width in this instance) into four families of twelve fonts each: Cadmium, Cadmium Compressed, Cadmium Condensed and Cadmium Expanded.

Fonts in the same collection generally share the same vertical metrics and can safely be mixed in text without any undue consequences.

Sets

Sets are usually four fonts from a single family. Generally 'style-linked', allowing Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic to be selected in most software, they provide a good way of purchasing the essentials from a family when the whole family is not required.
